Cleveland Clinic tops 'US News & World Report' list of best cardiology hospitals

For the 19th consecutive year, the Cleveland Clinic was ranked No. 1 among cardiology and heart surgery hospitals in the US News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals of 2014,” receiving a US News Score of 100.

“We’re honored to be named the best hospital for heart care for the 19th straight year,” Bruce Lytle, MD, chairman of Cleveland Clinic’s Miller Family Heart & Vascular Institute, said in a press release. “Behind the No. 1 ranking is a team of hundreds of committed caregivers who work collaboratively day in and day out to provide the best care and the most advanced treatment options to our patients every day. This award recognizes all of their talents and hard work and we are grateful to every one of them.”

The cardiology and heart surgery list is comprised of 720 hospitals. Only those that treated at least 1,321 inpatients in need of a high level of expertise in cardiology and heart surgery in 2009, 2010 and 2011 were considered.

In cardiology and heart surgery, the top 10 hospitals in the report included:

  1. Cleveland Clinic, Ohio
  2. Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.
  3. New York-Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell, New York, N.Y.
  4. Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore
  5. Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston
  6. Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
  7. Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston
  8. St. Francis Hospital, Roslyn, N.Y.
  9. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles

10.  Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, Houston

The rankings for this specialty are based on a score that accounts for a hospital’s reputation among specialists, survival rates, success in keeping patients safe, patient volume and nurse staffing.

Among the top three hospitals ranked in cardiology and heart surgery, Cleveland Clinic ranked No. 4, Mayo Clinic ranked No. 3 and New York-Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell ranked No. 7 on US News & World Report’s 18 Honor Roll hospitals.
