St. Jude Medical recently announced that the FDA approved the next-generation Merlin.net Patient Care Network, which is a secure, Internet-based remote care system for patients with implanted medical devices, according to a press release.

The Merlin.net Patient Care Network (PCN) provides clinicians with additional insight into changes in their patient’s HF status through advanced impedance and lead monitoring capabilities, improving the management of patients at risk for sudden cardiac death or ventricular and atrial arrhythmias, according to the release.

The new version enables remote transmission of patient data measured from CorVue Thoracic Impedance Monitoring, a diagnostic feature that tracks and reports changes in impedance that may reflect changes in HF status, monitored by St. Jude Medical implantable cardioverter defibrillators and cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillators. The latest version also features the Lead Assurance Alert, which bundles new and existing notifications into one comprehensive alerting suite.

The system gathers and stores data from the implant procedure, in-clinic follow-up visits and from remote device transmissions sent from a patient’s home via the Merlin@home Transmitter. Clinicians can wirelessly download and securely transmit patient data from the implanted device.
