Cardiology Today Editorial Board member honored for advancements in cardiology

The Council on Clinical Cardiology of the American Heart Association presented its highest award, the James B. Herrick Award, to Bernard J. Gersh, MB, DPhil, a member of the Arrhythmia Disorders section of the Cardiology Today Editorial Board.

Gersh is professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minn. He was honored for “his significant and sustained contributions to CVD prevention, diagnosis and treatment —- discoveries advancing the practice of cardiology and benefiting patients and physicians worldwide,” according to a press release issued by the AHA.

Research by Gersh showed for the first time that CABG surgery equally benefits the elderly and younger patients, and he has also gathered important data on long-term survival of patients who undergoing surgery for heart defects. His other research has helped to clarify risks and benefits of CABG surgery and balloon angioplasty.
