The Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography has released a document intended to unify terminology for cardiac CT that is regularly used in clinical and investigative practice.

“Since the emergence of cardiac CT at the turn of the 21st century, there has been an exponential growth in research and clinical development of the technique, with contributions from investigators and clinicians from varied backgrounds: physics and engineering, informatics, cardiology and radiology. However, terminology for the field is not unified,” Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) members wrote. “As a consequence, there are multiple abbreviations for some terms, multiple terms for some concepts, and some concepts that lack clear definitions and/or usage.”

To help bring clarity to the field of CT, the new document, which will be published in the May/June issue of the Journal of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography and implemented in future issues of the journal, addresses 75 terms considered most relevant as determined by a group of 10 cardiologists, radiologists and researchers. The document, which has been in development since 2009, includes definitions and recommendations for abbreviations on terms that range from contrast and acquisition to equipment, exams, imaging processing and interpretation. Also mentioned in the document are terms recommended for discontinuation.
