HealthGrades, a leading and independent health care rating organization, has rated hospitals for the effectiveness of their organ transplantation programs.

The ratings will be based on patient outcomes and data quality gathered at 266 hospitals across the United States. Information on the transplantation programs calculated by the scientific registry of Transplant Recipients will be made public on the HealthGrades website (www.healthgrades.com), and will include one-year and three-year risk-adjusted patients survival, as well as one-year and three-year risk adjusted graft survival. In addition, the rate at which waitlisted patients receive transplants and waitlist mortality will also be included.

Hospitals achieving a statistically significant improvement in three-year survival rate and rates of waitlist mortality that were either lower-than-expected or not statistically different from the calculations from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients were eligible for HealthGrades Transplant Excellence Awards. According to a press release, 10 hospitals of 266 received Kidney Transplant Awards, six received Liver Transplant Awards, four received Lung Transplant Awards and two received Heart Transplant Awards.

“As with other HealthGrades hospital ratings, these are based on objective patient outcomes, giving patients a sound basis for evaluating transplant centers,” HealthGrades’ Rick May, MD, said in a press release.
