Activity Description

Evolving technologies and refined techniques for cataract and refractive surgery continue to develop, increasing the number of options for improving visual acuity and enhancing patient quality of life. Successful cataract and refractive surgery rely on an interprofessional team, each playing a role in the multifactorial process, from preoperative assessment to postoperative care. Of the many vision-correction techniques available, selection can be challenging and must take into consideration patient preferences, characteristics, and expectations. In this CE monograph, experts in the field evaluate advances in presurgical/surgical diagnostics and intraoperative guidance systems; assess cataract workflow systems that can aid in screening, planning, lens selection, and patient communication; summarize advances in biometry as well as intraocular lens calculations and platforms; and review interprofessional approaches to care that can improve efficiency and overall outcomes for patients undergoing cataract refractive procedures.

Target Audience

The intended audience for this activity is ophthalmologists, optometrists, and other health care professionals involved in the management of patients undergoing cataract and/or refractive surgery.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Evaluate advances in presurgical/surgical diagnostics and intraoperative guidance systems and their impact on improved refractive outcomes.
  • Assess cataract workflow systems that can aid in screening, planning, lens selection, and patient communication.
  • Explore the latest information on phacoemulsification, including the use of fluidics, ultrasound, phacodynamics, advanced techniques, and instrumentation.
  • Examine the latest information pertaining to the digital integration of medical and surgical eye care.
  • Investigate the evaluation and management techniques necessary to optimize cataract surgery outcomes in complex cases.
  • Explore diagnostic and surgical techniques that can be used to correct astigmatism before, during, and after cataract removal.
  • Summarize advances in biometry as well as intraocular lens calculations and platforms.
  • Describe interprofessional approaches to care that can improve efficiency and overall outcomes for patients undergoing cataract refractive procedures.
