Activity Description

Thyroid eye disease (TED) is a multifactorial autoimmune disorder characterized by a spectrum of signs and symptoms. Collaborative efforts among endocrinologists and ophthalmology and optometry providers are necessary to improve patient evaluation as well as clinical and surgical decision-making. Thyroid eye disease is frequently misdiagnosed, due to both its heterogeneous clinical presentation and lack of understanding on the part of clinicians regarding the relationship between TED and hyperthyroidism. Abnormalities in thyroid hormones are pathognomonic to TED. Measurement of these hormones can assist diagnosis, and endocrinologists should be able to aid in early detection of TED to limit disease progression and to ensure that patients are referred to ophthalmologists.

The treatment paradigm of thyroid cancer has shifted in the past decade. Several treatment options are now available for most patients, including those with more aggressive tumors. Endocrinologists need to stay current on the changing treatment landscape as well as the screening approaches that can improve the overall management of patients with thyroid cancer.

The Comanagement of Thyroid Disorders for the Endocrinology Provider monograph will highlight the multidisciplinary and interprofessional approaches that can improve the overall management of patients with thyroid conditions, including thyroid cancer and TED.

Target Audience

The intended audience for the activities is endocrinologists, physician associates, nurse practitioners, and other healthcare professionals involved in the management of patients with thyroid disorders.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Utilize evidence-based methods that can improve the differential diagnosis and staging of TED
  • Incorporate referral strategies to improve the overall management of TED.
  • Identify therapeutics that have shown to be safe and effective for the treatment of patients with TED.
  • Incorporate practices and procedures that can improve the multidisciplinary and interprofessional management of patients with TED.
  • Assess the use of risk stratification in differentiated thyroid cancer.
  • Utilize therapies that can improve the management of intermediate-risk thyroid cancer.
  • Incorporate screening and therapeutic approaches that can improve the overall management of medullary thyroid cancer.
