Overview

Provider Statement

Support Statement

This activity is supported by an educational grant from Horizon Therapeutics USA, Inc.

Activity Description

Thyroid eye disease (TED) is a multifactorial autoimmune disorder characterized by a spectrum of signs and symptoms. Collaborative efforts among ophthalmologists, endocrinologists, neuro-ophthalmologists, oculoplastic surgeons, optometrists, and other specialists are necessary to improve patient evaluation as well as clinical and surgical decision-making. Thyroid eye disease is frequently misdiagnosed, due to both its heterogeneous clinical presentation and lack of understanding on the part of clinicians regarding the relationship between TED and hyperthyroidism. Misdiagnosis can place patients at risk, because management of TED is most effective during the initial, active phase of the disease. However, differential diagnosis can be achieved with the assistance of imaging, and early treatment may limit disfigurement and reduce vision loss. Ophthalmology and optometry providers should be knowledgeable about the presentation of patients with TED as well as the available surgical and nonsurgical treatments. The Comanagement of Thyroid Eye Disease for the Ophthalmology and Optometry Provider monograph will highlight the multidisciplinary and interprofessional approaches that can improve the overall management of patients with TED as well as the treatment of coexisting ocular conditions.

Target Audience

The intended audience for this activity is ophthalmologists, oculoplastic surgeons, neuro-ophthalmologists, optometrists, physician associates, nurse practitioners, and other healthcare professionals involved in the management of patients with thyroid eye disease (TED).

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Explore new insights pertaining to the etiology and pathogenesis of thyroid eye disease (TED).
  • Employ methods and modalities that can improve the differential diagnosis of TED.
  • Detail current and emerging non-surgical management strategies that may improve outcomes in patients with TED.
  • Identify surgical practices and procedures used to treat patients with TED.
  • Incorporate best practices for managing ocular conditions that may coexist with TED.
