Women with high prepregnancy BMI have higher stillbirth and perinatal death risks, but this association weakens with chronic hypertension presence, becoming similar or reversing at 26 to 35 weeks’ gestation, researchers reported.

The number of congenital syphilis-related stillbirths increased annually from 2016 to 2022 in the U.S. while the proportion of cases resulting in stillbirth remained stable, researchers reported in Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Preexisting diabetes was associated with a more than tripled odds of experiencing stillbirth or perinatal mortality, with higher risks for mothers with type 2 vs. type 1 diabetes, researchers reported in Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Postpartum readmission risk was higher for women with stillbirth vs. live birth deliveries, with mental health/substance use disorders and thromboembolism accounting for more, and hypertension fewer, readmissions following stillbirth.

Twin birth rates rose with increasing prepregnancy BMI, and approximately 25% of the association can be explained by assisted reproductive technology use, according to study results published in JAMA Network Open.

Maternal cannabis use was associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, including small for gestational age, preterm birth, stillbirth and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, linked to placental function, researchers reported in JAMA.
