One in five febrile infants and toddlers with UTIs were missed by automated screening methods because they did not have pyuria, according to a study published in Pediatrics.

The incidence of asymptomatic pyuria is correlated with rapid decline in kidney function irrespective of the autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease genotype and cystic growth.

Study findings published in The Journal of Pediatrics suggest that following current guidelines for the diagnosis of UTI in children may result in many children with a UTI going untreated, researchers said.
