HOUSTON — Beyond individuals, social, geographic and economic factors influence the risk for developing diabetes. By identifying specific factors on the local level, researchers are developing interventions to head off disease, according to two presenters at the American Association of Diabetes Educators annual meeting.

Adults with type 2 diabetes have lower natural killer cell activity compared with those with normal glucose tolerance or prediabetes, according to findings published in the Journal of Diabetes Investigation.

According to the most recent data compiled by the CDC, 57 million U.S. adults have prediabetes, a figure that has reached pandemic levels.
