I was recently in our endocrine clinic, reviewing labs in between patients while also supervising three fellows. Once I saw this thyroid lab report, I paused, and then, I smiled.

“My patients, my heroes” is a special series in my blog that I dedicate to my patients, first launched in May 2020. As I stated in that first post, “Beating the Odds,” I believe every patient I have encountered has a special story that goes beyond the boundaries of the regular doctor-patient clinic visit; beyond the boundaries of EMR clicks, templates, macros and box-checking.

The other day, I was sitting in Sparrow Hospital’s cafeteria having lunch before rounding, when I heard a peculiar music clip from the overhead speakers. I felt goosebumps.

Was I dreaming? Was it all mere imagination?

In September 2017, I wrote about an old doctor’s bag I found in one of the conference rooms where we hold our endocrine fellowship teaching sessions. The bag had three letters printed in silver permanent ink: J.F.C.

Around this time last year, I wrote about a sad first — the first time in history that March Madness was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States.

After a very long year, it is once again time to spring forward for the daylight saving time change, coming up this Sunday, March 14, at 2 a.m.
