VIDEO: Surgeon presents intelligent, ultrafast femtosecond laser for cataract surgery
PARIS — Pavel Stodulka, MD, PhD, performed the first in-human surgery with a new femtosecond laser for cataract surgery manufactured by the French company Keranova. The laser, which raised great interest at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting, fragments the nucleus in 20,000 cubic fragments of 200 µm size in less than 20 seconds and through a sophisticated intelligent technology customizes laser power to the different parts of the lens.
VIDEO: Treating dry eye preoperatively significantly improves accuracy of cataract surgery
PARIS — At the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting, John A. Hovanesian, MD, speaks about the importance of treating dry eye before cataract surgery. Four-week treatment with Xiidra (lifitegrast ophthalmic solution 5%, Novartis) significantly improved accuracy of biometry and visual outcomes in a study.
Selective laser device yields precise capsulotomies
PARIS — In a series of 125 patients looking at the precision of capsulotomies created with the CAPSULaser compared with manual technique before routine cataract surgery, Erik L. Mertens, MD, FEBOphth, of Medipolis Eye Centre in Antwerp, Belgium, found the selective laser capsulotomy technique to be better in sizing accuracy, circularity and centration.
