Bicycle-Related Injury

The number of scooter-related injuries in the United States nearly tripled from 2016 to 2020, according to a study published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons.

Despite a 62% increase in public bicycle utilization from 2000 to 2014, according to the 2014 American Community Survey, recently published results showed a “significant downtrend” in bicycle-related injuries from 2012 to 2021.

A comparison of electric scooter- and bicycle-related injuries in Oslo, Norway, found most injuries involving “e-scooters” were in young adults at nighttime who were not wearing helmets and were often intoxicated.

While overall pediatric fracture volume has decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic, the proportion of injuries occurring at home, as well as on bicycles and trampolines, has increased more than 25%, according to published results.
