SAN DIEGO — In this video exclusive, three experts on type 1 diabetes in pregnancy offer tips for off-label use of automated insulin delivery systems for improving glycemic targets and quality of life during pregnancy.
Carol J. Levy, MD, CDCES, professor in the department of medicine and department of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive science and director of the Mount Sinai Diabetes Center and Type 1 Diabetes Clinical Research at Mount Sinai, described developing a pregnancy-specific algorithm for automated insulin systems.
Sarit Polsky, MD, MPH, assistant professor of medicine and pediatrics at the Barbara David Center for Childhood Diabetes and Adult Clinic at the School of Medicine at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, described how to use a commercially available system — off label — without a pregnancy-specific algorithm.
Denice Feig, MD, MSc, FRCPC, professor of medicine obstetrics and gynecology, and health policy, management and evaluation at the University of Toronto, and head of the Diabetes in Pregnancy Program at Mount Sinai Hospital, discussed findings from the CONCEPT trial that showed that continuous glucose monitoring improved time in range. She said a system currently approved only in Europe may improve outcomes even more.
