In this video exclusive, Caroline T. Nguyen, MD, talks with Michelle A. Kominiarek, MD, about pregnancy considerations after bariatric surgery.

Nguyen is an assistant professor of clinical medicine, obstetrics and gynecology in the

division of endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism at Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. She is also an Endocrine Today Editorial Board Member.

Kominiarek is an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology (maternal-fetal medicine) at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago.

There are no formal guidelines for managing pregnancy after bariatric surgery, Kominiarek said. Women who have had surgery should receive preconception counseling about special considerations in pregnancy from their surgical team, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist or an obstetrician.

Challenges for managing pregnancy after bariatric surgery might include weight gain, changes in appetite, diabetes screening and, less commonly, complications from surgery.

Nguyen and Kominiarek are speaking on this topic and more as part of the USC Jorge H. Mestman Endocrine and Pregnancy Symposium taking place virtually on Feb. 18, 2023.
