VIDEO: Better counseling, insurance needed for fertility preservation for transgender people

In this video exclusive, Caroline T. Nguyen, MD, talks with Zaraq Khan, MBBS, MS, FACOG, about fertility preservation options for transgender patients.

Nguyen is an assistant professor of clinical medicine, obstetrics and gynecology in the division of endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism at Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. She is also an Endocrine Today Editorial Board Member.

Khan is an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology, chair of the division of reproductive endocrinology and infertility, and a consultant in the division of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Khan describes current fertility preservation goals and options for people with testes and ovaries and also technologies under investigation that may become clinically available in the future.

Compared with practice in Europe, many U.S. patients undergoing gender-affirming treatment are not properly counseled about fertility, Khan said, and insurance coverage for fertility preservation is limited.

“We still need a lot of advocacy, and that needs to start from the ground up,” Khan said.
