A joint statement from three medical organizations advised health care professionals to recognize that women experiencing menopause need individualized treatment options.
Prompted by hormone replacement therapy shortages and widespread misinformation about menopause, the British Menopause Society, Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) and the Society for Endocrinology came together with evidence-based information to emphasize that the needs of women vary and must be considered when deciding the proper treatment, according to a press release.
The positive and negative effects of hormonal therapies with regard to age, cardiovascular condition, cancer status and weight were also highlighted in the statement as factors that need to be understood when selecting treatment.
“The aim of this statement is to provide clear recommendations of best practice for health care professionals caring for women and people of all ages who have menopausal symptoms,” Edward Morris, MD, FRCOG, president of the RCOG, said in the release. “All women will experience the menopause in different ways and that’s why it’s important they are provided with tailored care that’s right for them.”
