A Diagnosis Divided
We begin with a 24-year-old previously healthy female presenting with gradual worsening — over the last few months — migraine-like headaches accompanied by nausea but no vomiting. She was in a usual state of health when she started getting headaches, that were described as intermittent with a deep ache sensation. The headaches were unilateral and would switch from left to right and sometimes occur between the eyes. The patient described the severity as 8 out of 10. The headaches did not wake her from sleep, and she was unsure of what triggered them. She denied hearing loss, tinnitus, numbness or tingling of extremities, weakness, joint pain, joint swelling or rashes. She reported no new medications.
Less than one-third of reproductive-age women with rheumatic disease use prescription contraception
Just 32.1% of reproductive-age women with rheumatic diseases use any kind of prescription contraception, while at the same time more than 70% use at least one fetotoxic medication, according to findings published in Arthritis Care & Research.

Rheumatic adverse effects of checkpoint inhibitor therapy chronic in 50% of patients
BOSTON — The potential rheumatic side effects of checkpoint inhibitor therapy in patients with cancer can include arthralgia, arthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica, giant cell arteritis, myositis, sicca syndrome and systemic lupus erythematosus, and can be chronic in approximately 50% of patients, according to findings presented here.
CV safety of celecoxib, other NSAIDs debated before FDA
Two FDA advisory committees will have a joint meeting on April 24-25, 2018 to discuss a supplemental new drug application submitted by Pfizer requesting an update of CV safety information on the labeling of celecoxib.
CV effects of NSAIDs similar when combined with aspirin
In a new post hoc analysis from the PRECISION trial, celecoxib had a better CV safety profile vs. ibuprofen and naproxen among patients not taking aspirin, but significant differences in CV events were not seen in patients taking aspirin.
Younger age, high disease activity linked to methotrexate failure
Patients with arthritis who are younger, have rheumatoid factor positivity and demonstrate higher disease activity at baseline are at an increased risk for experiencing methotrexate failure due to inefficacy, according to findings published in Arthritis Care & Research.
Biologic use before, during pregnancy not linked to preterm birth
The use of biologic medications for autoimmune diseases prior to or during pregnancy is not associated with an increased risk for preterm delivery or infants that are small for gestational age, according to findings published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.
Inflammatory arthritis disease activity improved in new millennium
Patients with early inflammatory polyarthritis diagnosed within the new millennium experienced improved disease activity, compared with those diagnosed during the early 1990s, according to findings published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.
