FDA to examine heart-related deaths associated with febuxostat
The FDA announced that preliminary data from a safety trial demonstrate that, compared with allopurinol, febuxostat is linked to an increased risk for heart-related death. The FDA will examine the final results of the study once they are available, according to a press release.

SAN DIEGO — At the American College of Rheumatology Annual Meeting, Angelo L. Gaffo, MD, MSPH, discussed a study that determined a validated definition for gout flares. The definition was based on criteria that included: presence of any swelling joint, presence of warm joints, pain at rest greater than 3 in a scale out of 10 and patient self-reported gout flares.
