The Healio Rheumatology staff have won the APEX Award for Writing/Topics – Health & Medical Writing for the cover story, “‘Moral imperative’ to address physician burnout emerges in wake of COVID-19 pandemic.”

The story, available here, appeared in the April 2023 issue of Healio Rheumatology.

"I'm proud that our physician burnout article was honored as I think it touches on an important subject that is often overlooked in the health care industry," Robert Stott said.

The APEX Awards for Publication Excellence recognize achievements in graphic design, editorial content and the ability to achieve overall communications effectiveness.

“Burnout is a massive issue that overlaps with nearly every other major development in rheumatology — from the ongoing workforce shortage to pandemic readiness, to the increasing reliance on technology,” said Jason Laday, managing editor for Healio Rheumatology. “Also, it follows that if a provider is suffering, so will their patient.”

The Healio Rheumatology staff takes its cues from key opinion leaders in the field who have their finger on the pulse of the entire community. As such, readers were likely unsurprised by the data and opinions expressed in the piece. Rather, it validated the challenges of their day-to-day experiences.

“I am proud of this story not necessarily because it shines a light on burnout — because, to be honest, our audience definitely already knew all about it — but rather because it makes clear that all providers deserve to work in a place that respects employee well-being,” Laday added.

The Healio Rheumatology team takes reporting on these important topics seriously.

“This APEX award demonstrates the first-class reporting and writing found in Healio Rheumatology, not to mention Healio’s other publications,” said Robert Stott, editorial director at Healio. “I am incredibly proud of our news team’s dedication to delivering high-quality content to the physician audience they serve.”

Stott also acknowledged the significance of burnout as a topic of reporting and discussion in the rheumatology space.

“I’m proud that our physician burnout article was honored as I think it touches on an important subject that is often overlooked in the health care industry,” he said. “I hope that this award recognition reminds physicians of the importance of reassessing their work-life balance as a form of self-care.”

Readers of Healio publications can expect an ongoing commitment to providing cutting-edge news and timely features on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.

“The Healio news team routinely goes above and beyond to ensure that the articles we share are informative, accurate and impactful for our audience,” Stott said. “I believe this award highlights the excellence and passion that drive our news team every day. Congratulations to our entire Healio team for this well-deserved honor.”
