In this Healio video exclusive, Leonard Calabrese, DO, chief medical editor of Healio Rheumatology, discussed the top items from the February issue, including an exploration of how the placebo effect can be applied in rheumatology.
“I can’t tell you how excited I am about our cover story on exploring the power of the mind,” Calabrese said. “This is rheumatology meets placebo and nocebo science, big time. There’s so much of placebo that we need to harness to treat our patients.”
The cover story investigating the true power of the placebo effect features contributions from experts including Bharat Kumar, MD; Luana Colloca, MD, PhD, MS; Ted J. Kaptchuk, MD; and Tuhina Neogi, MD. In the accompanying editorial, Calabrese noted how this knowledge can help clinicians bring about “palpable and meaningful changes” to symptoms patients care about most.
Also appearing in this month’s issue are updates on what Calabrese described as “the wild, wacky world of biosimilars.” This includes CVS Caremark replacing Humira with biosimilars on its national commercial formularies, emerging data on satisfaction with New Zealand’s mandatory transition to a Humira biosimilar, and more.
“I can’t keep up with it,” he said. “I really need a summary like this to talk about who’s making what, who’s selling what, who’s buying what, who’s making money and who’s losing money.”
Finally, Calabrese highlighted “some good news” from the pages of this month’s issue, as data indicate holding abatacept and TNF inhibitors is not necessary to enable significant antibody response to COVID-19 vaccine boosters.
