Key takeaways:

  • Johns Hopkins remains at the top of the rheumatology hospital rankings.
  • The survey of all hospitals this year features an overhaul of the U.S. News methodology.

Johns Hopkins has been named the best hospital for rheumatology in the United States for the sixth consecutive year by U.S. News & World Report, which recently released its Best Hospitals Survey for the 2023-2024 year.

Other top hospitals in the ranking for rheumatology include the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York at No. 2, the Cleveland Clinic at No. 3, the Mayo Clinic at No. 4, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital at No. 5. Last year, the Cleveland Clinic was ranked No. 2, while the Hospital for Special Surgery was ranked No. 3. In another change, University of Michigan Health, Ann Arbor, entered the top 11 for rheumatology for the first time.

“Consumers want useful resources to help them assess which hospital can best meet their specific care needs,” Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News & World Report, said in a press release. “The 2023 to 2024 Best Hospitals rankings offer patients and the physicians with whom they consult a data-driven source for comparing performance in outcomes, patient satisfaction and other metrics that matter to them.”

Although most specialties included in the report are ranked via performance measure data assessing structure, process, and outcomes, a lack of data for rheumatology practices meant that the rankings for this specialty were determined by the results of an expert opinion survey only. Other specialties that were decided by expert opinion alone included ophthalmology and psychology.

This year, U.S News & World Report analyzed a total of 4,500 hospitals across 15 specialties. The 2023 to 2024 survey includes several methodological overhauls, including weighing outpatient outcomes, the inclusion of an expanded role for outpatient cases, and reduced weight on expert opinion, while giving more weight to objective quality measures.

In addition to taking the top spot in rheumatology, Johns Hopkins was named among the 22 “Honor Roll” hospitals, which, according to U.S News & World Report, excelled across multiple specialties. Johns Hopkins also made the top 10 in other specialties including ear, nose and throat; neurology and neurosurgery; obstetrics and gynecology; psychiatry; and urology.

Additional top rheumatology hospitals to make the honor roll were Brigham and Women's Hospital, the Cleveland Clinic, Massachusetts General Hospital, the Mayo Clinic, NYU Langone Hospitals, UCLA Medical Center, UCSF Health-UCSF Medical Center and University of Michigan Health in Ann Arbor
