Johns Hopkins was named the best rheumatology hospital in the United States for the fifth consecutive year by U.S. News & World Report, which recently released its annual Best Hospitals ranking for 2022 to 2023.
In addition to the Baltimore-based hospital talking the top spot for rheumatology, the Cleveland Clinic took No. 2 and the Hospital for Special Surgery, in New York, placed No. 3. The Mayo Clinic, last year’s No. 3 hospital for rheumatology, was ranked No. 4 this year.
“For patients considering their options for where to get care, the Best Hospitals rankings are designed to help them and their medical professionals identify hospitals that excel in the kind of care they may need,” Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News, said in a press release announcing the results of this year’s survey.
The ranking of rheumatology hospitals is based “solely on expert opinion as determined by the physician survey,” according to methodology described by U.S. News & World Report.
In addition to taking the top spot in rheumatology, Johns Hopkins ranked No. 5 overall and in the top 10 in other specialties including ear, nose and throat; gastroenterology; geriatrics; neurology and neurosurgery; obstetrics and gynecology; psychiatry; pulmonology and lung surgery; and urology.
In all, the survey included more than 4,500 hospitals, recognizing specific facilities in 15 specialties.
According to U.S. News & World Report, the 2022-2023 survey features improved methodologies compared to previous years, and includes new ratings for ovarian cancer surgery, prostate cancer surgery and uterine cancer surgery.
