Johns Hopkins Hospital has once again been ranked the top hospital for rheumatology by the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals Survey for the 2020-2021 year.

The Baltimore-based hospital retained its spot at No. 1 in the rheumatology rankings this year after receiving the honor in the 2019-2020 and the 2018-2019 surveys. In addition to its honors in rheumatology, Johns Hopkins Hospital was ranked No. 1 in ear, nose and throat care, neurology and neurosurgery, and psychiatry for 2020-2021. It was ranked No. 3 overall in the nation for the fourth year in a row.

“Our faculty, staff and trainees have an extraordinary focus on providing outstanding patient-centered care, as well as partnering with patients to discover the causes and mechanisms of the rheumatic diseases, all while teaching the next generation of physicians,” Antony Rosen, MBChB, MS, professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and director of the division of rheumatology, told Healio Rheumatology. “We are in great company among outstanding rheumatology programs in the U.S., and as a field, we bring great skill and value to rheumatology patients and society.”

This year, U.S. News & World Report compared more than 4,500 hospitals across the country, with 134 receiving rankings in at least one of 16 medical specialties. In addition, a total of 563 were ranked among the best regional hospitals in a state or metro area.

According to the publication, the data used in the 2020-21 Best Hospitals rankings and ratings come from a period predating the COVID-19 pandemic and were not affected by the pandemic’s impact on hospitals.

Although the vast majority of this year’s honorees for rheumatology have appeared regularly in previous rankings over the years, one new name did manage to break through — University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Presbyterian Shadyside, which was ranked 12th out of 13 hospitals.
