VIDEO: RNA Blood Test May Aid in Reducing Diagnostic Error for Fibromyalgia

DESTIN, Fla. — The use of a blood sample to test if a patient’s gene expression pattern is consistent with fibromyalgia could assist health care providers in differentiating fibromyalgia from autoimmune conditions with similar symptoms, according to findings presented at the 2018 Congress of Clinical Rheumatology.
“We have developed a new diagnostic test for fibromyalgia syndrome that can be used by providers to distinguish fibromyalgia syndrome from other inflammatory like RA and lupus,” Chase Spurlock, PhD, CEO of IQuity, told Healio Rheumatology. “We find that using RNA data, which is a snapshot of real-time activity happening in the cells at any given time, coupled with our machine-learning algorithms produces a diagnostic effect that is more than 90% accurate.”
“We are excited about the opportunities for RNA diagnostics to make a difference in the lives of patients living with autoimmune and related conditions,” he said.
