SAN DIEGO – Certain HLA alleles appear to safeguard against sacroiliitis among patients with psoriatic arthritis, while others may increase an individual’s likelihood of developing the condition, according to findings presented at the American College of Rheumatology Annual Meeting.

Arthur M. Mandelin, MD, PhD, assistant professor of medicine in the division of rheumatology at Northwestern University, describes the study design and the results. Certain alleles, such as HLA-B*27 and HLA-C*02, increased the risk of developing sacroiliitis, while others, such as HLA-C*04, were protective.

“This is an interesting study that points … to a future association between sacroiliitis in the psoriatic arthritis population and certain HLA alleles,” Mandelin said. “Perhaps, in the future, we’ll need to check for these alleles to predict what a patient’s risk is of developing either unilateral or bilateral sacroiliitis.”
