According to findings by researchers from the University of Eastern Finland and published in Scientific Reports, a novel cartilage degeneration algorithm may predict the progression of osteoarthritis in patients.

To predict subject-specific progression of osteoarthritis (OA), researchers developed a cartilage degeneration algorithm. According to a university press release, the degeneration algorithm was “based on stresses experienced by the knee joint during walking, and these were simulated on a computer. The algorithm assumes that stresses exceeding a certain threshold during walking will cause local degeneration in the articular cartilage of the knee.”

They applied the algorithm to 21 patients identified from the OA Initiative database. At baseline, the patients had no OA.

Investigators compared results from the algorithm with data from the 4-year follow-up visit. Investigators found the algorithm allowed them to place patients in the appropriate group.

Results showed the highest degeneration values were seen among patients with KL grade 3 knees and that patients with OA had significantly higher maximum degeneration and degenerated volume within the cartilage compared with healthy patients.
