Men with gout have a significantly increased risk for erectile dysfunction, according to a recently published analysis from England.
“[We] observed increased relative risk of [erectile dysfunction] ED within the year before gout diagnosis,” Alyshah Abdul Sultan, PhD, from Keele University in the United Kingdom, and colleagues wrote. “Therefore, it may be more reasonable to suspect hyperuricemia as one of the underlying causes of ED among men with asymptomatic hyperuricemia but are yet to develop clinically apparent gout.”
Researchers identified 9,653 men with gout who had 38,218 age- and practice-matched controls. The rate of ED post-gout was 193 per 10,000 person-years.
Investigators found an increased risk for ED in patients diagnosed with gout compared to patients without gout (ratio = 1.31). In addition, there was an increased risk in the year before gout diagnosis (ratio = 1.63) compared with men in the control group. However, there was no increased ED risk among men who received urate lowering therapy within 1 year and 3 years after gout diagnosis.
“These findings may have important implications in planning a multidisciplinary approach to managing patients with gout,” the researchers wrote. – by Will A. Offit
