Pulmonary embolism was associated with lupus, according to results of a recently published retrospective study.
Srinadh Annangi, MBBS, from the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, and colleagues performed a retrospective analysis of the National Hospital Discharge Survey data between 2001 and 2010 of patients aged 15 years and older.
They found a significant association between lupus and pulmonary embolism, after adjustment for gender, race, age and comorbidities (ratio = 2). Of the comorbidities, primary hypercoagulable disorder had the greatest link with pulmonary embolism (ratio = 15.37). In addition, African-American race was linked with pulmonary embolism (ratio = 1.08) when compared with white patients. – by Will A. Offit
