VIDEO: Increased risk for surgical complications found for patients with rheumatic disease

DESTIN, Fla. — At the Congress of Clinical Rheumatology Annual Meeting, Susan Goodman, MD, from Cornell Medical School, spoke about perioperative management for patients with rheumatic disease who undergo arthroplasty and how there is an increased risk for certain complications in these patients.

Due to lack of awareness that patients with rheumatic disease undergo arthroplasty at the same rate as healthy patients, Goodman said most patients present for surgery with immunosuppressant medications, which can increase the risk for complications, such as prosthetic joint infections. As a result, guidelines were published for the management of these medications, Goodman said.
