NEW YORK — At the Interdisciplinary Autoimmune Summit, Charles L. Raison, MD, professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, gave a summary of his presentation on immune-mediated inflammatory diseases and their relationships with the microbial world.

Raison said humans co-evolved with a variety of microbes that taught the body what to attack and what to leave alone. Because of the differences between the modern and ancient world, humans now have separated from these microbes or have altered the organisms themselves, which he said has led to an increase in rheumatic as well as other diseases.
