NEW YORK — At the Interdisciplinary Autoimmune Summit, Sherine E. Gabriel, MD, MSc, discussed the following seven ways to create value-based care in rheumatology: less geographic variation in care; use of shared medical records for research; a total joint registry; preventive health services; precision medicine; a center for patient-centered outcomes research; and systems integration.

“We know that health care spending in this country is growing fast, certainly faster than the economy,” Gabriel said. “We spend more on health care than other developed nations, even when we adjust for wealth, but we are not getting value for money and there are large unexplained variations of care in our diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis.”

Every year, $6,428 in annual wages are lost per person with rheumatoid arthritis, she noted. “Improving health care is imperative,” Gabriel said. “The increase in cost of rheumatic diseases makes this area a high priority target for value enhancement.” – by Will Offit
