Results of a patient survey conducted at the Dermatology and Rheumatology Treatment Clinic in Vancouver, Canada, show that most patients found it beneficial to see both a dermatologist and rheumatologist in a combined location.

One hundred surveys were distributed to patients at the Dermatology and Rheumatology Treatment (DART) Clinic with 23 questions related to the quality and timeliness of patient visits.

Being able to see both a dermatologist and a rheumatologist was reported to be beneficial by 88% of patients, with 56% who strongly agreed with this. A belief that adequate information about medication and treatment was reported by 86% of patients, with 36% in strong agreement. About 88% of patients reported enough time was provided for their consultation, with 45% in strong agreement; and 89% reported being more knowledgeable about their condition after attending the DART clinic, with 39% responding with strong agreement. Long wait times were reported by 15% of patients.

“Even though our teaching clinic is busy with many patients and multiple learners, patients still feel that they are given an adequate amount of time for discussion and counseling,” the researchers wrote. “Time management is a particular challenge in this environment, and we will explore ways to reduce or best utilize the patients’ wait time prior to the appointment.” – by Shirley Pulawski
