The American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association has released a report available to the public that addresses topics in autoimmune diseases, research and patient information following a one-day autoimmune summit in Washington, D.C., that involved about 20 researchers.

The report focuses on information about the “current thinking in autoimmune disease research, advocacy and patient issues” including research related to environmental triggers, the relationship between autoimmune diseases, cytokines and fatigue, and information for patients about how to communicate with physicians about their symptoms. Other sections focus on the potential benefits and drawbacks of the use of biosimilars, gender influences in autoimmune diseases, future research needs and other topics discussed at the summit.

The summit, which was cohosted by the National Coalition of Autoimmune Patient Groups and American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association (AARDA) was held in March, at which time a patient survey was released. According to a press release, panelists and speakers at the event included Noel R. Rose, MD, PhD, former director for autoimmune research at Johns Hopkins University and chairman emeritus of AARDA’s Scientific Advisory Board; Frederick W. Miller, MD, PhD, deputy chief in the Clinical Research Branch and Head, Environmental Autoimmunity Group at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences; Robert H. Carter, MD, deputy director for the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases; Anne Davidson, MBBS, investigator at Feinstein Institute for Medical Research; and William F. Harvey, MD, MSc, FACR, clinical director of the Arthritis Treatment Center at Tufts University School of Medicine and chair of the Government Affairs Committee for the American College of Rheumatology, director of the Johns Hopkins Autoimmune Disease Research Center and AARDA chairman emeritus of the Scientific Advisory Board.
