ASCENT-COPD: Aclidinium shows continued success in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
DALLAS — Aclidinium reduces moderate to severe exacerbations without increasing cardiovascular event risk in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, regardless of beta-blocker use or background treatment with long-acting beta-agonists with or without an inhaled corticosteroid, new data presented at the American Thoracic Society International Conference suggest.
High-intensity dust exposure linked to airway abnormalities in World Trade Center firefighters
DALLAS — In firefighters who responded to the World Trade Center on 9/11, high-intensity dust exposure and early symptoms were associated with an increased likelihood of evidence of emphysema, bronchial wall thickening and air trapping on CT scan, according to data presented at the American Thoracic Society International Conference.
Eosinophil-guided therapy noninferior to standard treatment for COPD exacerbations
DALLAS — Patients with acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease requiring hospitalization who received eosinophil-guided corticosteroid therapy fared as well as patients who received standard care, according to the CORTICO-COP study.
Add-on benralizumab not linked to lower exacerbation rates in COPD
DALLAS — In patients with moderate to very severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who had a history of exacerbations, were on double or triple therapy and had eosinophilic inflammation, add-on benralizumab did not reduce the rate of exacerbations more than placebo, according to the GALATHEA and TERRANOVA studies presented at the American Thoracic Society International Conference.
Very preterm birth, low birth weight may increase risk for suboptimal lung function in adulthood
Very preterm birth or very low birth weight may put a person at risk for not reaching full airway growth potential in early adulthood, according to a study published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine.
Lung volume reduction surgery improves outcomes in advanced emphysema
Among patients with end-stage emphysema, lung volume reduction surgery was associated with significant improvements in clinical and quality-of-life outcomes at 1 year after treatment, researchers reported in the Annals of Thoracic Surgery.
Aclidinium does not increase cardiovascular risk in COPD
In patients with moderate to severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and increased cardiovascular risk, aclidinium did not increase the risk for major cardiovascular events and decreased COPD exacerbations compared with treatment with a placebo, according to the ASCENT-COPD trial published in JAMA.
Lung volume reduction confers clinical benefit in emphysema
Among patients with severe emphysema, lung volume reduction interventions including surgery, endobronchial valves, endobronchial coils or sclerosing agents improved lung function, exercise capacity and quality of life, but these interventions were also associated with increased risk for serious adverse events, according to a systematic review and meta-analysis.
