Dual bronchodilator therapy bests monotherapy in COPD patients not using inhaled corticosteroids
NEW ORLEANS — In a post hoc analysis of pooled data from four phase 3 studies, combination therapy with tiotropium plus olodaterol resulted in greater improvements in lung function and symptoms than with tiotropium alone in patients with COPD who were not using inhaled corticosteroids.

The American Diabetes Association, the American Lung Association and the American Heart Association are working together to urge adults living with chronic diseases to prioritize annual influenza vaccination and to encourage health care providers to advocate for and support influenza immunization within their practices, according to a press release from the organizations.
Triple combination COPD therapy beneficial in patients without exacerbation history
NEW ORLEANS — A subgroup analysis of the KRONOS study showed the reduction in COPD exacerbations observed with the triple fixed-dose combination budesonide/glycopyrrolate/formoterol fumarate metered-dose inhaler, as compared with a dual bronchodilator, was not driven by patients with a history of prior exacerbations.
Aclidinium safe, beneficial in COPD patients with, without prior exacerbations
NEW ORLEANS — In a subgroup analysis of the ASCENT-COPD trial, treatment with the long-acting antimuscarinic bronchodilator aclidinium bromide reduced the risk for new exacerbations compared with placebo in patients with moderate to very severe COPD and high cardiovascular risk, regardless of prior exacerbations.
Health care costs increase as COPD exacerbations spike during colder months
NEW ORLEANS — An uptick in hospitalizations and deaths related to COPD exacerbations during the coldest months of the year — January, February and March — places a significant burden on health care resources, researchers reported at the CHEST Annual Meeting.
Beta-blocker fails to prevent COPD exacerbations
NEW ORLEANS — In patients with moderate to severe COPD without an established indication for beta-blocker use, treatment with metoprolol did not reduce the risk for exacerbations compared with treatment with placebo, results from the BLOCK COPD trial suggest.
