Texas Children’s Hospital named best hospital for pediatric pulmonology, lung surgery

Texas Children's Hospital was named the top hospital for pediatric pulmonology and lung surgery in the 2023 to 2024 rankings by U.S. News & World Report.
According to a U.S. News & World Report press release, Texas Children’s Hospital topped the 17th annual Best Children’s Hospital rankings, which included 50 children’s hospitals that provide pulmonary care.
Scores were based on the success of each hospital with managing asthma, cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy, as well as performing lung transplants.
Texas Children’s Hospital, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and Nationwide Children’s Hospital rounded out the top three of the pulmonology and lung surgery rankings.
Notably, both Texas Children’s Hospital and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center earned a spot in the top three on the Best Children’s Hospitals Honor Roll, demonstrating their high ranks in several specialties.
Healio briefly spoke with one medical leader from each of the top three hospitals to learn how this ranking showcases their dedication to serving patients with pulmonary diseases.
“Our No. 1 ranking is a reflection of our diverse pulmonary team’s commitment to providing innovative, evidence-based care for our patients and families,” Peter W. Hiatt, MD, chief of pulmonary medicine at Texas Children’s Hospital, told Healio. “This honor inspires us to continue building our expertise, strengthening our clinical and research programs, and improving outcomes for each of the patients we serve.”
Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center director of pulmonary medicine Raouf S. Amin, MD, told Healio the facility emphasizes holistic care and focuses on patient outcomes.
“Pulmonary medicine at Cincinnati Children’s makes every effort to provide holistic care to patients and families as a single unit by building multidisciplinary care centers within its organization,” Amin said. “The outcomes of patients and their families are the focus of the pulmonary program at Cincinnati Children’s. We are proud of the recognition received by U.S. News & World Report as a reflection of these commitments to our patients.”
Karen S. McCoy, MD, chief of the division of pulmonary medicine at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, told Healio there are several reasons why Nationwide Children’s Hospital is highly ranked.
“Every day of the year — holidays, weekends, etc — we are prompt to respond to concerns by parents about their child’s breathing,” McCoy told Healio. “It’s breathing, not constipation, so it deserves a speedy response. We practice in a state-of-the-art manner, and we have multiple centers of excellence for various disease processes that fall under pulmonary medicine. Finally, we are agile participants in clinical and basic research surrounding respiratory diseases.”
Looking ahead to next year’s rankings, McCoy told Healio Nationwide Children’s Hospital always works to be named No. 1, but it is not the reason behind their goal to provide the best pediatric care.
“We’ve been in the top 10 since 2012,” she said. “This is not what drives our care, but we are very proud of our performance, and we share it throughout the entire organization of pulmonary which is about 130 people. We have 17 doctors, but we use all manner of multidisciplinary support for all of our disease processes, and that makes us stronger.”
