TB outbreak reported in two San Diego high schools

The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency reports two new cases of tuberculosis exposure at Sweetwater High School and Serra High School.
The outbreak occurred between July 20 and October 25 at Sweetwater High School in San Diego, California. The Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) is collaborating with school officials to inform potentially exposed individuals, and will offer free testing for students and staff on Tuesday, November 29.
At Serra High School, HHSA is working alongside school administrators to notify those possibly exposed between August 29 and November 7, 2016. Testing will be offered at Serra High School for these students on Monday, December 5.
Tuberculosis (TB) — spread through airborne transmission — usually attacks the lungs, but can also affect the kidney, spine, and brain. TB can be fatal if not properly treated. In 2016, there are 182 cases of TB reported to date. San Diego county reported 234 cases in 2015. – by Savannah Demko
