The Mayo Clinic has been ranked as the No. 1 hospital for pulmonology care nationwide, according to U.S. News & World Report.

The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota tops the publication’s list of best hospitals for pulmonology for 2015-2016, released this morning. The hospital held the distinction last year as well.

“The Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Division at Mayo Clinic Rochester is honored and grateful for this recognition. Our multifaceted team is committed to providing the highest quality of care to our patients with pulmonary disease, critical illness, and sleep disorders,” Ulrich Specks, MD, chair of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Division, told Healio.com/Pulmonology.

The 26th annual U.S. News & World Report’s Best Pulmonology Hospital rankings are intended to help patients with life-threatening or rare conditions find hospitals that excel in treating the most difficult cases.

The publication ranked medical centers overall, as well as in 16 specialties.

The Mayo Clinic finished second in the overall rankings as the nation’s No. 2 best hospital.

Other centers named to the top 10 for pulmonology care are: University of Colorado Hospital, National Jewish Health, Cleveland Clinic, Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, UC San Diego Medical Center, Duke University Hospital, Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University and UCLA Medical Center.

The rankings are based on a procedure that measures patient volume, risk-adjusted survival rates and adequacy of nurse staffing, as well as other care-related indicators.

“Patients deserve high-quality information on hospitals,” Ben Hader, chief of health analysis at the publication, said in a press release. “We strive to provide them with the most comprehensive data available so they can make more informed decisions together with their doctor about where to undergo treatment.”
