NEW YORK — In this Healio Video Perspective from the American Psychiatric Association annual meeting, Candace Hatten-Powell, MD, talks about opioid-sparing medications that may be used following bariatric surgery.

“If there is one point that I would like for you all to take home from my talk, it would be that the rapid rise time to a higher peak concentration post-bariatric surgery places patients at higher risk of developing opioid use disorders,” said Hatten-Powell, a consultation and liaison psychiatrist at Montefiore Medical Center.

“We need to be mindful of this, monitoring our patients with universal drug screening, as well as constantly talking to them about ways we can manage their pain using opioid-sparing techniques as well as multimodal approaches.”
