NEW YORK — In this Healio Video Perspective from the American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting, Eric Hollander, MD, discusses adult autism diagnosis, treatments and prevalence.

Mental health issues drive “the negative outcomes in autism,” said Hollander, who is a professor of psychiatry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the director of the Autism and OCD Spectrum Program at the Psychiatric Research Institute of Montefiore Einstein.

“Adult psychiatrists should screen for autism spectrum disorders and treat the comorbid mental health issues,” he said. “Optimal treatment is a combination of medications plus psychosocial and educational treatments. If we look for these problems, we’re going to find them, and we can help those individuals.”
