SAN FRANCISCO — Today’s psychotherapy has evolved to incorporate psychobiology and neuroscience, David J. Hellerstein, MD, says in this Healio video at the American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting.

“Our new model of psychotherapy, which is very much based upon the neuroplasticity of the brain ... is a way to connect people to their own histories [and] also take advantage of the brain’s plasticity to try to help tell new stories,” he said.

Just last week, Hellerstein, director of depression evaluation services in the department of psychiatry at Columbia University, released his new book, “The Couch, the Clinic and the Scanner: Stories from Three Revolutionary Areas of the Mind.”

He said that doctors and patients communicate through storytelling, re-telling patients’ close-ended stories of suffering and pessimism so they are more open-ended and hopeful.
