NEW ORLEANS – Autopsy results in otherwise healthy people who died from COVID-19 suggest that immunoglobulin therapy may be an effective treatment choice, Avindra Nath, MD, said at the American Psychiatric Association annual meeting.

Findings from autopsies in these patients “suggest extensive glial cell activation, including infiltration of macrophages, that is probably the prime mediator of many of the [psychiatric symptoms],” Nath said.

A new NIH trial will evaluate the effect of high-dose corticosteroids and IV immunoglobulin on immune parameters, he said
