NEW ORLEANS — In this video, Franklin Schneier, MD, of NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia University, discusses new developments in the treatment of social anxiety disorder.
“Social anxiety disorder is one of the most common psychiatric disorders available and we have good treatments available,” Schneier said, “Yet many people don’t seek treatment or get adequate treatment.”
Breakthroughs in psychotherapy include CBT with additional features such as emotional regulation, meta-cognition, online CBT, and virtual reality technologies.
Emerging treatments in pharmacotherapy include benzodiazepines, which Schneier believes are underused, and combination treatments with CBT, such as dicyclomine.
“No one treatment fits all,” Schneier said. “We still have a great need for improving these treatments.”
