In 2014, an estimated 43.6 million adults aged 18 years or older, or 18.1% of all U.S. adults, had any mental illness in the past year, excluding substance use disorders, according to the NIMH.

Data from the CDC’s National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey indicated 13% of children aged 8 to 15 years had a diagnosable mental disorder within the last year.

Regarding addiction, 21.5 million adults aged 12 years and older had a substance use disorder in the U.S. in 2014, according to data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
