SAN ANTONIO — As the legalization of cannabis increases across the U.S., clinicians should be prepared on how to manage patients who use cannabis, according to Andrew Penn, RN, MS, NP, APRN-BC, of Kaiser Permanente, Redwood City, California; and the University of California, San Francisco.

In this video, Penn discusses approaches for working with individuals who use cannabis, including a harm reduction framework which may involve using less cannabis or using at a later age.

Clinicians should also be aware of risks associated with cannabis use, such as earlier onset of psychosis and genetic markers of risk for psychiatric illness associated with cannabis use.
