TORONTO — The 168th annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association will feature innovative clinical research and practice-related sessions on topics including suicide risk factors in the ED, exposure to terrorism and substance abuse among college students.

The meeting will be held in Toronto from May 16 to 20.

The theme of this year’s meeting is “psychiatry: integrating body and mind, heart and soul,” to illustrate the unique position of psychiatry between neuroscience and general medicine.

Presidential symposia will include sessions on genetics and neurobiology, marijuana policy and treatment in 2015, mood disorders and neuroinflammation and more.

Research posters will address a wide range of topics, including:

  • identifying suicide risk factors in the ED;
  • understanding recruitment and ideology of radical extremism;
  • mental health effects of lack of natural light exposure in the workplace;
  • novel approaches to reducing substance use among college students;
  • long-term effects of terrorism exposure;
  • the impact of spirituality on cancer survivors; and more.

“This meeting will provide hundreds of sessions to learn the latest science, sharpen your clinical skills, and inform you about new models of care delivery as well as plentiful networking and social opportunities,” Paul Summergrad, MD, president of the APA, said in a press release. “We look forward to sharing with you all the education and excitement that APA’s annual meeting has to offer.”
