As part of World Autism Awareness Day, the National Institutes of Health has awarded UC Davis MIND Institute and UCLA $5.3 million in initial funding for their Autism Centers of Excellence programs.

The two universities join nine others around the country to support collaborative, multidisciplinary science aimed at exploring the causes of and finding the most effective treatments for autism disorders.

“Research sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, CDC and Health Resources and Services Administration has advanced our understanding of risk factors underlying the development of autism spectrum disorders, as well as supported the development and effective deployment of tools for early detection and intervention,” US Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a press release. “Screening at younger ages is increasingly helping children to get the most effective treatments as soon as possible.”
