Roxadustat shows greater hemoglobin gains compared to epoetin alfa for ESKD
WASHINGTON — Data presented here from the ROCKIES phase 3 trial showed use of the investigational hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase inhibitor drug roxadustat led to greater increases in hemoglobin levels compared to use of epoetin alfa in patients with ESKD and anemia.
Wearable and implantable devices show potential for kidney failure, but more work needed
In a recently published article, researchers provided an overview of ambulatory hemodialysis devices, which they suggest “offer the potential for self-care treatment outside the clinical setting as well as frequent and prolonged sessions.” However, they argued that ongoing efforts related to technological improvements and safety are required before implementation.

WASHINGTON — Results of a study presented here showed home remote monitoring of high-risk patients on peritoneal dialysis helped reduce uncontrolled blood pressure, aligned treatment weight closer to target weight and increased positive answers to health questions posed to patients about their care.

WASHINGTON — In a secondary analysis of the CREDENCE trial presented here at ASN Kidney Week, researchers focused on subgroups of different GFRs. They determined canagliflozin is safe and effective even for patients with eGFR of 30 mL/min/1.73m2 to less than 45 mL/min/1.73m2.
VIDEO: Patients who develop gout after transplantation more likely to return to dialysis
WASHINGTON — At ASN Kidney Week, Abdul A. Abdellatif, MD, FASN, presented results that assessed the relationship between gout and return to hemodialysis among patients who had a kidney transplant. Researchers found patients who developed gout after transplantation were more likely to need maintenance hemodialysis compared with patients without gout and those with preexisting gout.
Combination therapy prevents HCV infection in non-viremic organ recipients
BOSTON — Hepatitis C infection was prevented or rapidly cured in transplant recipients who received organs from donors infected with the virus following combined treatment with ezetimibe and direct-acting antiviral therapy, according to study results presented at The Liver Meeting 2019.
